Filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury shot to prominence in 2007 following the release of Inside, a home invasion horror that’s considered a paradigm of New French Extremity. For Americans, it may seem like the duo went into hibernation for the decade between Inside and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface, released in September—but nothing could be farther from the truth.
The follow-up to Inside is a hallucinatory morality tale called Livid, released overseas in 2011. The reason Americans don’t know the film exists is that The Weinstein Company owns the US distribution rights and the remake rights. Thus, Livid has been sitting on a shelf for years, gathering dust.
In 2014, Bustillo and Maury released Among the Living, an epic slasher and coming of age saga that will blow horror fans away. Among the Living just arrived on Shudder as an exclusive, and genre aficionados will want to devour it. With an intro that plays out like a sequel to Inside and elements of a teenage adventure along the lines of IT and Stand by Me, this is the film horror fans have been begging for. Fans of John Carpenter’s Halloween will swoon, and those who watch Among the Living won’t soon forget it.
