Horror fans are often divided among those on Team Freddy and those on Team Jason. Since the inconclusive ending to 2003’s Freddy vs Jason, many have hoped for a second round, another slash-fest that would declare a definitive winner—proving once and for all whether the world’s greatest villain hales form Elm Street or Crystal Lake. Sadly, we’ll never see an epic rematch, but we finally have an answer as to who’s the superior slasher.
Robert Englund is the actor who has become synonymous with Freddy Krueger, playing the iconic Springwood Slasher in all 9 Nightmare on Elm Street movies, plus the short-lived horror anthology series Freddy’s Nightmares. The failure of the 2010 remake is largely blamed on the fact that Jackie Earle Haley’s version of Krueger lacked all the charm and nuance Englund had infused into the character over 2 decades.
Still, Englund has been loud and clear for years: He will never play the role of Freddy Krueger again. He donned the makeup and prosthetics for one last convention appearance in 2014 and has put that chapter of his history to bed. Yet it never fails that every interview he ever gives eventually drifts to the topic of Freddy Krueger, and if the actor would don the infamous bladed glove again if offered the opportunity. Take this recent interview with Entertainment Weekly published yesterday, for example; the question was asked and the answer is still “No”.
For his part, the actor says he’s satisfied with that ending to his legendary run with the character. “I’m too old to do another Freddy now,” shares Englund, 70. “If I do a fight scene now it’s got to be real minimal because I can’t snap my head for eight different takes and different angles. My spine gets sore. I can still be mean and scary, but I’m mostly relegated now to sort of Van Helsing roles, old doctors and s—. So it’s fun that the last moment of me ever playing Freddy is a wink to the audience.”
All illuminating, to be sure, but how does this confirm that Jason Voorhees is the most elite slasher?
The last wink refers to the final moment of Freddy vs Jason (below), when Krueger’s decapitated head winks at the audience, suggesting rumors of his demise have been greatly exaggerated. Apparently, it was just Englund’s way of signing off.
This means fans need to give up on ever seeing Round 2—not to mention ever seeing Englund in a red-and-green stripped sweater. It’ll never happen. Freddy’s dead, and Jason Voorhees is the undisputed winner of the Slasherverse—until the next battle royale, at least, with another icon who’s still alive (or at the very least, undead).
Official Synopsis: Two horror icons face off in this supernatural movie. Disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who attacks his victims in their dreams, has lost much of his power since citizens of his town have become less afraid of him. Enlisting the help of fellow violent murderer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger), Freddy orchestrates a new killing spree. However, when the hockey-mask-wearing psychopath won’t stop chopping up Freddy’s intended victims, the two ghouls start to battle each other.
Devastated Freddy fans can take comfort in the fact that Krueger is returning to an all-encompassing Slasherverse—in digital form. The Slasher will be part of the next expansion pack for the survival horror game Dead by Daylight. Read all about it in the link below.
