Believe the hype!
Though it wasn’t on anyone’s list of Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2018, The Ritual has emerged as the first truly amazing genre film of the year. While Insidious: The Last Key, Winchester, and The Cloverfield Paradox have all proved disappointing, director David Bruckner delivers a powerful supernatural horror steeped in Scandinavian mythology and anchored by compelling performances that convey genuine human drama.

Though it begins like another Blair Witch knock-off, The Ritual develops into something unique by the 2nd Act. Ultimately, the film feels like an evil cousin to André Øvredal’s Trollhunter (released in 2010). The Ritual may not have a famous cast or sleek/expensive FX, but its more compelling, engrossing, and cathartic than anything I’ve seen in ages.
Give the trailer and synopsis for The Ritual a look-see below. The screenplay was penned by Joe Barton and is based on the novel by Adam Nevill; the film stars Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, and Robert James-Collier.
Official Synopsis: Reuniting after the tragic death of their friend, four college pals set out to hike through the Scandinavian wilderness. A wrong turn leads them into the mysterious forests of Norse legend, where an ancient evil exists and stalks them at every turn.
