The remake of the cult phenomenon The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been in the works for over a year; the project was first announced back in April of 2015. In January, we learned that American Idol winner Adam Lambert would be taking on the role of Eddie (played by Meatloaf in the original); in May, it was announced that Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) would be playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the role that made Tim Curry a cultural icon.
The remake is currently filming and will air on Fox as a 2-hour special this Fall.
While fan response to the remake has been mix, one very important original cast alumni is none too pleased. I’m talking about Rocky Horror scribe Richard O’Brien, who also played the cantankerous caretaker Riff Raff in 1975.
In an interview with This is Cabaret, O’Brien didn’t mince words about his feelings regarding the remake; in response to the comment/question, “There have been mixed reactions to the new film version of Rocky Horror. What’s your message to fans of the original who are not sure whether to see this version?” O’Brien replied:
I think that it is a project that is misconceived and (sadly for the players) badly cast. The producer and director seem to have missed the point entirely. I will say no more as I may be tempted to say too much.
Needless to say, O’Brien certainly isn’t shivering with antici…pation, and won’t be doing The Time Warp again.
