If you live in or around Chicago, it’s more important than ever to keep your eyes on the skies; over the past couple of years, there have been over 15 reported sightings of the ominous cryptid known as Mothman, with 4 happening just in the past couple month—an alarming increase in frequency. The most recent widely reported sighting happened on June 3rd. The fact that Mothman sightings are often considered bad luck and/or harbingers of impending disaster, many Chicago residents are on edge.
Ironically, these sightings are coinciding with the impending release of a new documentary. Most horror fans were first turned on to Mothman with The Mothman Prophecies, directed by Mark Pellington and starring Richard Gere in 2002. But while that film claimed to be based on real events, the story told was convoluted and metaphysical; difficult to grasp and separated from the creature’s roots in folklore. The Mothman of Point Pleasant, however, is a serious exploration of the actual facts surrounding the elusive and intimidating Mothman.
Beginning in 1966, people reported sighting an imposing entity with glowing red eyes in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The sighting ended abruptly in 1967 following the Silver Bridge collapse which resulted in the deaths of 46 motorists. Many believe the Mothman’s appearances were a warning of the catastrophic events to come; others believe Mothman has been sighted in other areas where disasters later occurred.
The video below from Paranormal Junkie discusses the most compelling and terrifying of the recent Chicago Mothman sightings. Have a watch and let us know what you think in the Comments section. After that, check out the trailer and synopsis for The Mothman of Point Pleasant.
