Mere hours after getting word that 20th Century Fox plans to remake The Fly, we’re getting news of another classic franchise getting revisited: The Matrix! THR was first to drop the news, which has taken the Internet and sci-fi fans by storm. While not much is known at this time, speculation is rampant.

More Matrix? Bet on it. It’s still not clear what shape the project will take, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix, the iconic 1999 sci-fi movie that is considered one of the most original films in cinematic history, with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment. Sources say there is potential interest in Michael B. Jordan to star, but much must be done before the project is ready to go.
Other sites and those commenting on social media have been using the word “remake”, but I’m hoping (praying) this is merely speculation. I can’t think of a franchise less in need of a reboot; the first Matrix movie was launched in 1999 with the 3rd bowing in 2003. The cast is still virile, the FX are still impressive, and the series ended with only a tentative peace established between Humans and Machines. While the assault on Zion has been halted, humanity remains enslaved within the vast machinery of the Matrix, essentially reduced to organic electrical batteries.

In summation: A Matrix remake is unnecessary; another Matrix film, one that acknowledges and continues on with the established mythology: That’s something I can get behind!
So will Keanu be reprising the role of Neo? Again, per THR:
While promoting John Wick: Chapter 2, Reeves said he would be open to returning for another installment of the franchise if the Wachowskis were involved. “They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?” he told Yahoo Movies. However, it is likely that Warners will look elsewhere to attract an A-list director and star.
The chances of the Wachowskis returning, however, is considered incredibly slim.
Obviously, this project is in its infancy, but we’ll be keeping track of its movement and bring you reports as additional details emerge. Stay tuned!
And check out a trailer and synopsis for the 1st Matrix below.
Official Synopsis: In the near future, a computer hacker named Neo discovers that all life on Earth may be nothing more than an elaborate facade created by a malevolent cyber-intelligence, for the purpose of placating us while our life essence is “farmed” to fuel the Matrix’s campaign of domination in the “real” world. He joins like-minded Rebel warriors Morpheus and Trinity in their struggle to overthrow the Matrix.
The Matrix stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss.
