We first got word last April that Kino Lorber was putting together a 4K restoration of Rawhead Rex, released in 1986. The cult sleeper was directed by George Pavlou, based on a short story by Clive Barker who wrote the screenplay. Despite being a critical and financial flop when released, the film has amassed a huge following in the decades since its release, and Barker even discussed the possibility of a remake in 2010.

Late last week, we got a peek at a new poster and restored trailer for the Rawhead Rex 4K—and they look fantastic! Have a gander:
Official Synopsis: “Rawhead Rex is a demon, alive for millennia, trapped in the depths of hell and waiting for release. He is held by an ancient seal, imprisoned for centuries in a barren field near the hamlet of Rathmore, Ireland. Over time this gruesome legacy has been forgotten, dismissed as an odd pre-Christian myth, until Tom Garron (Donal McCann) decides to plow the field his ancestors knew better than to disturb. The seal is broken, and an unspeakable evil is unleashed – on a rampage of blood and lust.
Howard Hallenbeck (David Dukes), an American historian on a working vacation in Ireland, discovers on the stained-glass windows of a local church a series of scenes illustrating the reign of terror of Rawhead Rex. But the one piece of glass depicting the defeat of the monster is missing. Howard is desperate for an answer – for Rawhead Rex is on the loose, and he is insatiable!”
The 4K Restoration should be available on Blu-ray in time for Halloween, and Kino Lorber hopes to give Rawhead Rex a limited theatrical re-release simultaneously. We’ll keep our ears to the ground to bring you additional details as they emerge. Stay tuned!
