Negan (played by Jeffery Dean Morgan) is the dastardliest villain every introduced on The Walking Dead, a man with an almost loving relationship with violence; a master manipulator who will gleefully dispatch anyone who stands in his way. But who was Negan before the zombie apocalypse? Did the fall of modern society turn him into an uncompromising dictator, or was he always a dangerous sociopath?

What did Negan do for a living? Was he married? Did he have kids? How did his barb-wire wrapped bat Lucille get her name? While fans of the comic book series by Robert Kirkman know the answers, those who only know The Walking Dead from the AMC series have only wondered.
Speaking to fans at last weekend’s Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta, Morgan announced that details of Negan’s past will indeed be revealed in this season of The Walking Dead—though not in flashbacks.
Morgan: “There is a lot of Negan’s backstory out there. We haven’t filmed any of that, but there are conversations with a few characters where we’ll find out a little more about him. We’ll have some quieter moments this year, some one-on-one interactions where you’ll learn more about where he’s from. Even if you hate Negan, you’re gonna start to understand how he became the man that he is and why he does the things that he does.”
