One of the hallmarks of Black Metal is growling vocals with nearly indecipherable lyrics, further distorted through a variety of processors. But if you find the vocalist of Pugtopsy especially opaque, there’s a reason: The band’s fronted by an olive-black female Pug named Pupcake Lövbacken. Pugtopsy just released a video for their debut single, Snorts of Sorrow, through their label Artery Recordings. Check it out:
The fact that the video includes messages encouraging shelter pet adoptions is as heart-melting as the grooves are soul-crushing!

Little is known about Pugtopsy beyond the limited information available on their official Facebook page (which also features some killer hoodies). Pupcake is backed by human musicians Jordan Boksel on Guitar, Shan Dan on Bass, and Casey Liatorp on drums. I was unable to locate anything resembling an official band bio, or any live footage of Pugtopsy in action. Music blogger Robin Ervolina at ShockwavesMagazine.com, however, claims to have seen the band on stage, producing quite a reaction:
Harnessing this chaos is effortless in Pugtopsy’s live shows, evidenced by their huge circle pits. This comes as no surprise, as Pupcake can run around in circles with the best of them. “Snorts of Sorrow” gives you a taste of the grunts and growls to come. Source.
Anyone out there got any vids of Pugtopsy in action? We’d love to get a glimpse of the live experience!
