No, I’m not disappointed at all. Sure, a comic-book series is just as good as a movie—even one we’ve been waiting 10 years for (I’ll keep repeating this to myself and maybe it’ll become true).
We literally jumped out of our seats on January 6th when we first got word that Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon writer/director Scott Glosserman was finally moving forward with a sequel. He went on to exclaim “He’s Back” on February 1st, elaborating that Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon would be a “Sprequel”: Part prequel, part sequel, and part remake. We were even given a synopsis:
Here’s what we know about B4TM so far: Before the Mask will pick up where Behind The Mask left off with Vernon disappointed that his fame did not catch on, but ready to get back to work. With Before The Mask, Glosserman seeks to create a spreemake, or a mash-up of a sequel, prequel, and remake, that will deconstruct and comment on the archetypes of prequels, sequels and remakes. The original team of filmmakers and actors, including all-stars Nathan Baesel (Leslie Vernon), Angela Goethals (Taylor Gentry) and Robert Englund (Doc Holleran), are anxious for the second Leslie Vernon installment.
Yesterday, following a 10th Anniversary screening of Behind the Mask at SXSW, an announcement was made regarding Before the Mask—and it’s certainly not what we were expecting:
You’ve been dying to know what happened to Leslie Vernon after you saw him pop back up in the morgue during the end credits of Behind the Mask and here’s your chance! The screenplay for our sequel, Before the Mask: the Return of Leslie Vernon is being transposed into a comic series and we are ready to unleash it on you, our fans!
Part of the stated goal of the comic-book series, which will be released in 8-parts, is to pave the way for an eventual film. Still, I can’t help but feel a bit duped by the situation. Personally, I’d rather fund a new film directly than invest in a comic book series without any guarantee of a cinematic eventuality. Of course, I’m not a big comic/graphic novel fan. Never have been.

While I don’t normally point our readers towards crowdfunding campaigns, the fact that we have been following Before the Mask all year makes this news. If you are interested in learning more about Before the Mask and/or contributing to the project, you can visit their Indiegogo page, HERE.

In the original Behind the Mask: Nice, normal-looking Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) has an obsession with movie-style slashers like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Leslie decides to follow in the footsteps of his heroes, and, ever the self-promoter, invites a documentary filmmaker (Angela Goethals) and her crew to follow him around as he constructs his own grisly legacy.
