Look, I’m not an Alien 3 hater—although I can understand those who are. As a nihilistic Goth in the 1990s, I found David Fincher’s film deliciously dreary and gloriously gloomy; the last scene was so emotional and final, it hit me like a gut punch. Of course, most people didn’t mind the film’s intensity or setting; the number 1 complaint about Alien 3 is that Newt (Carrie Henn) and Hicks (Michael Biehn) die in the opening credits! Bishop (Lance Henriksen) would be reactivated for a brief moment before being shut down for good.
It was a tough pill to swallow for fans of Aliens, its predecessor, which focused intently on the surrogate mother-daughter relationship between Newt and Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), becoming the emotional anchor of the film. Plus, after Hicks and Bishop survived (barely) such extensive and debilitating injuries, it was shocking to see them die in their sleep; quit non-triumphant for such heroic characters.
Like I said, I don’t mind a depressing horror offering, but I understand why fans of the Alien franchise were left uneasy by Part 3. (Part 4, Alien: Resurrection, is its own hot mess, so don’t even get me started).
While no one will admit it, I bet fans really wanted Ripley and Hicks to get married and raise Newt as their own back on Earth—reunited with Jonesy the cat, of course! At least that’s what animator Imogen Scoppie wanted for our heroes. She’s put her considerable talents to good use remaking Alien 3 into the film we really wanted to see (whether we’re willing to admit it or not!).
