I admit it: I was slow to the party. I didn’t start watching the HBO series Westworld until the first season, which concludes this Sunday, was half way over. I wasn’t expecting much, as my first impression was that it was some sort of weird reboot of Dead Wood with robots, but the show is something else entirely. And while it’s not horror-centric, there are plenty of horrifying aspects to the show: Violence, sex, sentient artificial intelligence, and murder are all par for the course. And while gore is never emphasized, it’s never shied away from.
Official Synopsis: The program takes place in fictional Westworld, a technologically advanced, Western-themed amusement park populated completely by synthetic androids dubbed “hosts”. Westworld caters to high-paying visitors dubbed “newcomers” (or just “guests”), who can do whatever they wish within the park, without fear of retaliation from the hosts.
Not only will Westworld tickle Horror Freaks, it’s a sci-fi fan’s wet dream. Anyone who’s a fan of films based on the mind-bending writings of Phillip K. Dick will love it, as will those who enjoy unlikely mash-ups. Westworld’s cast is A-list all the way, including: Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, James Marsden, Ed Harris, and Anthony Hopkins.
At its core, Westworld is a mystery; while there have been many shocking twists already, the 90-minute season finale, airing this Sunday on HBO, promises to be explosive in terms of revelations. I highly recommend genre fans with a broad sense of “horror” to get to binge-watching West World immediately!
Don’t have HBO? THR just reported this morning that Amazon Prime will begin offering HBO programming for an additional $15 a month (Source)! The time has never been better to take a trip to Westworld!
