The Walking Dead on AMC isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Despite a ratings dip earlier this season, the series’ 7th, the show is thrilling audiences with top-notch stories and performances since its midseason return. It’s no wonder, then, that The Walking Dead has already been renewed through Season 9, as executives at AMC are in no hurry to retire their juggernaut. But how many seasons would it take to get to the end of the story?
Most people are aware that The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman. While the show takes vast liberties with the source material in terms of characters and story arch, it sticks to Kirkman’s timeline—for the most part. The current point in the TV series is far behind what the author/illustrator has already penned, and he’s calculated how long it will take for the show to catch up:
“It took us 6 seasons to get to 100,” Kirkman wrote. “It won’t take us 6 years to get to 200 and that will take us to season … TWELVE. And we’ll still be ahead of the show at that point.”
In other words, (and as I previously stated): The Walking Dead isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. If the show runs through Season 12, that means we’ll be tuning in until at least 2022. And since Kirkman isn’t wrapping up his saga in the foreseeable future, it could conceivably go much longer.
Which makes fans and executives very happy. The show is making bank, as THR recently reported:
CEO Josh Sapan on the earnings conference call discussed the outlook for the Walking Dead franchise as analysts have been discussing its financial importance and outlook amid lower recent ratings. “The show continues to have creative strength and command a large and loyal audience, which has in turn attracted ad revenue to our great benefit,” he said. “The Walking Dead remains the No. 1 show on television among younger viewers by a very wide margin. Beyond advertising, The Walking Dead is illustrative of the benefits of owned franchise content.”
Concluded Sapan: “The Walking Dead is a franchise that will deliver ancillary revenues over different distribution platforms for many years to come as it does today. And we believe it will have a long life that accrues to our strategic position and financial benefit.”
The Walking Dead will be back Sunday for another gripping episode; check out a preview below.
