We first got news regarding a TV series based on Stephen King’s short story The Mist, in the works over at Spike, last April. To recap:
“From the brilliant mind of Stephen King and the incredible production team at TWC-Dimension TV, ‘The Mist’ will take audiences on a thrilling ride through a small town grappling with a mysterious and shocking horror,” said Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series, Spike TV. “Christian and the entire team at TWC-Dimension TV have crafted the framework for a compelling and distinctive series that will resonate with Spike’s expanding audience.” (Source: http://www.pophorror.com/mist-tv-series-coming-spike/)
Last week, series executive producer Christian Torpe dished to TVGuide.com on what fans can expect:
“Let’s call it a reimagination. Internally, we talk about it as doing the Fargo approach, where the movie and the TV show is the same, but it’s different. It’s like a weird, twisted cousin to the original source material. Fans of the movie and of the book and of Mr. King’s work will certainly see elements from it. … We also, in order to develop it for TV and turn it into an ongoing series, took our own little detours here and there.”
Torpe also discussed whether the story will follow the hopeful tone of King’s tale, or the significantly darker energy of Frank Darabont‘s controversial 2007 film adaptation. Darabont’s nihilistic conclusion was especially divisive.
“I personally love Mr. [Frank Darabont’s] ending. I thought it was a stroke of genius. We are playing around in that territory and we also know, of course, Mr. King’s ending. And I know Mr. King actually preferred Darabont’s ending And so I think we came up with our own spin on a very original and surprising ending.”
The Mist TV Series will follow different characters in different situations, all struggling to comprehend the enormity of their situation. There’s a mother and daughter trapped in a shopping mall with a rapist and a man with amnesia, for example.
There’s not set premiere date for The Mist TV series at this time, but it will definitely air in 2017. Obviously, we’ll keep you posted as details emerge. Stay tuned!
