Horror fandom and film theories go hand in hand, as the more one explores his or her favorite genre offerings, the more subtext bubbles to the surface. We’re a huge fan of film theories here at Horror Freak News, as they prove our favorite stories have lives of their own, implying mythologies and connections that go far beyond what we see in 90 minutes on screen.
The success of Andy Muschietti’s IT has resulted in many horror fans looking back at Stephen King’s novel (released in 1987); as a result, connections are being made, not just between IT and other works by King, but between all of the bestselling author’s works. Basically, King has created a complex multi-verse that puts anything penned by Marvel or DC to shame.

YouTube’s The Film Theorists recently produced a fan theory video that will blow the minds of Stephen King fans. The crux of his hypothesis is that each member of The Loser’s Club has the ability to “shine”, just like Danny Torrance and Dick Hallorann from The Shining. Each gained the ability through childhood trauma and each has power—power that makes them able to resist Pennywise’s attacks whereas their peers (Georgie, etc.) fell victim.
The theory has surprising validity and can be backed up by the source material. Dick Hallorann is actually a character in IT (albeit a minor one), so the 2 films/novels absolutely exist in the same universe. While most of the proof that The Losers have psychic powers are revealed in the second half of IT, The Film Theorist is able to connect the dots—and may even place IT at The Overlook Hotel. More specifically, perhaps Pennywise is The Overlook hotel. Chew on that for a minute.
Give the video a spin below and let us know what you think in the Comments section. Do The Losers Club shine? Is Pennywise more than just the dread of Derry? Do you see connections between IT and other works by Stephen King? Let’s discuss!
Official Synopsis: Like many of you I loved the new IT movie. But one thing has been bothering me since I saw IT. How exactly were the Loser’s Club able to overcome the master or fear – Pennywise? I mean he had plenty of opportunities to kill them off one by one. So I did a little digging, but what I found goes far beyond just their ability to survive.
