One of my biggest disappointments of 2017 so far was when Dimension pulled Amityville: The Awakening from their release schedule (for the 5th time!) mere weeks before it was set to hit theaters last June. My sadness was somewhat tempered by news that CineTel Films, producers of the I Spit on Your Grave franchise, have their own Amityville movie in the works: The Haunting on Long Island: The Amityville Murders is in pre-production.
Today, though, my Amityville excitement is at maximum with news that Eli Roth is producing yet another film based on the infamous home at 112 Ocean Avenue.
Broad Green Pictures has signed on to make 1974, with Casey La Scala directing a thriller based on the true events behind the most famous haunted house in Amityville, Long Island. La Scala wrote the script, which takes its jumping off point from the factual tragedy where Ronald DeFeo was convicted of murdering his mother, father, two brothers and two sisters. That was the grounding for the fright franchise The Amityville Horror, which focused on the next family that bought what seemed like an idyllic house in the suburbs. Eli Roth and Todd Garner are producing a film that is expected to be ready for production by September.
This news comes just days after news that Roth is producing an “extreme” Halloween-themed thriller called Haunt.

Obviously, this project is still in its infancy, so anything can happen. Still, we’ll keep our ears to the ground to bring you additional news regarding 1974 as details emerge. Stay tuned!
