Superhero movies seem to be moving into darker territories; once Deadpool proved the financial viability of R-Rated genre offerings, the door was thrown wide open. We’ve been told to expect upcoming horror elements in Aquaman, and Spawn is getting a reboot with a hard R rating. Perhaps in conjunction with this dark turn, we’re now seeing supervillain getting their own feature films. We’ve been cautiously following Venom since hearing assurances that it will be brutal and gory.

Today, at a Comic-Con panel discussing Legion, showrunner Noah Hawley announced he’s in pre-production on a Dr. Doom film at Fox. The reveal came, literally, at the very end of the event, so no additional information was given. Still, there’s plenty to speculate on.
We hope this means that Dr. Doom is being separated from the Fantastic Four franchise; Doom is the most successful aspect of every iteration of the iconic foursome, but the property has so far proved unadaptable. While he’s integral to the story of The Fantastic Four, he’s also gone up against the likes of Iron Man & The Avengers, meaning crossover potential is limitless.

Dr. Doom Biography: Doctor Victor Von Doom (or simply Doctor Doom) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The son of Romani witch Cynthia Von Doom, Doctor Doom traditionally has been the archenemy of the Fantastic Four, and the leader of the fictional nation of Latveria. He is both a genius inventor and a sorcerer. While his chief opponents have been the Fantastic Four, he has also come into conflict with Iron Man, Black Panther, the Avengers and other superheroes in the Marvel Universe. Though normally portrayed as a supervillain, since Civil War II in 2016, Doom has been depicted as a superhero, taking up the mantle of Iron Man from Tony Stark, and going on to join the Avengers.
Doctor Doom has made many appearances in video games, television series, and merchandise such as action figures and trading cards. He was ranked as the 4th Greatest Villain by Wizard on its 100 Greatest Villains of All Time list. IGN’s list of the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time ranked Doctor Doom as #3.
Doctor Doom has also been featured in other Marvel-endorsed feature films such as Roger Corman’s unreleased 1994 The Fantastic Four played by Joseph Culp, and the 2005 film Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer played by Julian McMahon. Toby Kebbell portrays the character in the 2015 reboot. (Source)
