Cinema owners and industry insiders got a look at footage from The Dark Tower, directed Nikolaj Arcel and arriving in US Theaters on July 28th, at CinemaCon last night. Reports are that the FX are amazing, with Matthew McConaughey, Idris Elba, and Tom Taylor displaying awesome chemistry. Most exciting, though, are hints that The Dark Tower will establish solid links to other important stories in Stephen King’s Cannon.
In interviews that accompanied the preview, the filmmakers enthused about bringing King’s world to life, with producer Akiva Goldsman calling it the writer’s “magnum opus.” Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer said that “The Dark Tower” has links to the rest of King’s oeuvre, a group of best-sellers that includes “It” and “Salem’s Lot.”
A source at Variety goes on to say The Dark Tower footage included a scene where Taylor is in a session with his psychiatrist; the clip includes a picture of The Overlook Hotel from The Shining! Hopefully, we’ll see the footage ourselves soon in the form of a trailer—which is long overdue in my opinion.
In the meantime, here’s what we know about The Dark Tower so far:
Official Synopsis: The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, roams an Old West-like landscape where “the world has moved on” in pursuit of the man in black. Also searching for the fabled Dark Tower, in the hopes that reaching it will preserve his dying world. The Dark Tower stars Katheryn Winnick, Matthew McConaughey, and Idris Elba and is slated for US Theatrical release on July 28th.
Stephen King originally published the first Dark Tower novel back in 1982; it’s unique in the bestselling author’s pantheon for its inclusion of western elements, along with horror and sci-fi. The Dark Tower series includes 8 books total, meaning this summer’s film could be the beginning of an enduring and profitable franchise.
