As far as horror movies special FX go, there’s been a long-running debate over which is better: Practical (i.e. prosthetics, fake blood, makeup) or GCI (computer generated imagery). While practical FX usually produce a more visceral reaction, there are limits; CGI, on the other hand, is limited only by a programmer’s imagination, but even the best of it somethings looks fake.
The most effective special FX these days, however, are those that combine cutting edge aspects of both schools, combining practical innovations with the latest advances in digital imagery. The results can be absolutely arresting, like in the clip below for War of the Planet of the Apes, breaking out into US Theaters this July.
