When 2016’s Blair Witch bombed, it seemed like that was the end of the franchise launched by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez in 1999. It’s a shame, in my opinion, considering director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett added new elements to the core mythology I felt were more than worthy of additional exploration.
It looks like rumors of The Blair Witch’s death have been greatly exaggerated! We might never get another feature film, but the saga will continue as a TV series.
Lionsgate is making some moves in the digital content space with their newly branded Studio L. The studio announced today their initial slate which includes three features set to bow this spring along with episodic projects in development.
The studio is also developing a series based on the horror phenomenon The Blair Witch Project as well as the comedy hit Waiting which originally starred Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris. Studio L is working on film production partnerships with BuzzFeed and The Onion.
Information is scant, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground in order to bring you additional updates as news emerges. Stay tuned!
Official Synopsis: A young man and his friends venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery surrounding his missing sister. Many believe her disappearance 17 years earlier is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when two locals act as guides through the dark and winding woods. As the night wears on, a visit from a menacing presence soon makes them realize that the legend is all too real, and more sinister than they could have ever imagined.
