Except for almost getting shanked by a crazy lady out in from of the Stockton Arena (a story for another day) the most exciting moment of this weekend’s Sinister Creature Con was the American Mary Reunion featuring writers/directors Jen & Sylvia Soska, along with the film’s leads Katherine Isabelle (who played Mary Mason) and Tristan Risk (who played the heavily modified Beatress Johnson).
Background: Sinister Creature Con is fast becoming one of California’s premiere horror events, modeled after conventions like Monsterpalooza that highlight the artistic side of movie making (as opposed to the swap-meet atmosphere that’s becoming increasingly common). The organizers are hardcore horror fans themselves, and everything they do is geared towards creating a truly memorable and positive experience for all genre lovers. Currently in its 3rd year, this was the first time Sinister Creature Con brought their event to Stockton; another Sinister Creature Con will be held in Sacramento in October. Find out all the information you need on their official website, HERE.
The Soska Sisters autograph/merch table was set up right alongside Isabelle’s and Risk’s, giving fans of these 21st Century horror icons a rare opportunity to meet them all at the same time. For those who don’t know, the filmmakers and actresses are all friends in “real life”, and their combined energies are absolutely infectious. The four came together for a panel yesterday that was an absolute blast! We’ll be working with our friends at The Horrific Network to bring you some footage shortly.
In addition to becoming superstars of indie horror following the release of American Mary in 2012, the Soska’s have directed See No Evil 2, Vendetta, and they are currently spearheading a remake of David Cronenberg’s seminal body horror Rabid. They also have a whole new slew of younger fans who know the “Twisted Twins” primarily as the stars of Hellevator on The Game Show Network.
In addition to shocking audiences as Mary Mason, Isabelle is perhaps best known for her turns in the iconic/feminist werewolf movie Ginger Snaps (released in 2000) and, more recently, a recurring role on TV’s Hannibal.
Tristan Risk is a beautiful anomaly; it’s amazing how shocked many people are to learn that the famous model/dancer/burlesque star played Beatrice in American Mary, as the character and the actress look nothing alike! A couple of Risk’s upcoming films include Mania: A Fucked Up Lesbian Love Story (a Jessica Cameron film) and she plays the titular role in Ayla, a supernatural/psychological creeper from Gut writer/director Elias.
If you’ve yet to experience the American Mary phenomenon for yourself, check out the trailer and synopsis below.
Official Synopsis: The allure of easy money sends Mary Mason, a medical student, into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called “freakish” clients.
