The very same night Season 6 of American Horror Story (Roanoke) concluded, producers aired a teaser for Season 7. It was a simple, single shot of choppy ocean water with the caption “Sweet Dreams”. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to connect the nautical implications of the teaser to a model ship also seen in Roanoke’s finale [Featured Image]; immediately, theories emerged hypothesizing Season 7 would take place on a ship.
Of course, all conjecture was dashed when showrunner Ryan Murphy revealed, to much shock and even consternation, that the upcoming installment of FX wildly popular anthology series was inspired by the recent presidential election.
Suddenly, most speculations posited on the upcoming season centered on whether or not we’d be seeing Trump and Clinton characters in Season 7. Murphy briefly quelled the convo by stating the presidential candidates would not be characters, before reversing course. AHS fan favorite Sarah Paulson fanned the flames stating she’d love to tackle the role of Donald, even if it meant extensive prosthetics.
Yesterday, we brought you clips of an interview Murphy gave with E! News; while the main subject was the auteur’s other FX hit series Feud, he dropped some crucial info regarding AHS Season 7 that may reveal the connection between election night 2016 and the previously suggested maritime theme. To recap:
On the 2016 Election and how Clinton and Trump will appear in the show:
“We don’t have actors playing them. You’ll see them on television. The first 10 minutes of the season, this season, takes place in a very eerie macabre way on election night and there’s something terrible that happens in the lives of our characters on election night as they’re watching it all go down. Which in itself was a horror story, so it’s like a horror story upon a horror story.” (Source)
Now that we know the election is merely a jumping off point, and that Clinton and Trump will only appear on TV (and not played by actors), we can refocus our conjecture on the ship in the bottle Easter Egg. How’s this for putting 2 and 2 together:
Season 7 of American Horror Story will kick off with a shipwreck on election night. The survivors will regroup on a desert island where they must create their own cohesive society. A struggle for leadership could lead to tribal war ala Lord of the Flies, but with grown-ups.
Obviously, this will remain purely theoretical—at least until the official theme for Season 7 is announced (hopefully next month). Still, there seems like plenty of fodder in this scenario for a full season.
